For Environment, Development and Peace
What is GCS?
Nepal is regarded as a sovereign state with an area of 147,181 square kilometres (56,827 sq mi) and a population of approximately 36 million. Nepal is the world's 93rd largest country by land mass and the 41st most populous country. Nepal has a rich natural, cultural, linguistic climate, diversity.
The elections for the constituent assembly on May 28, 2008 overwhelmingly favored the abdication of the Nepali monarch and the establishment of a federal multiparty representative democratic republic. Nepal has been officially declared as the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.
For years, Nepal's failure to develop was linked to the geographical constraint of being a land-locked nation. Now, despite immense potentials to raise the living standards of the people through socio-economic development with the proper use of country's vast natural resources, the state is locked in political battles and has been unable to give adequate attention to environment conservation, sustainable economic growth and good, environmental and democratic governance. Although all the major political parties?the UCPN-Maoist, Nepali Congress, the CPN-UML and Madhesh-based parties?rode the wave of political reforms and democracy in order to attain power, these parties have failed to deliver sustainable economic development and maintain peace and stability in the country despite the enormous resources and potentialities the country has.
Green Civil Society (Nepali Greens) has come into existence with the initiative of environmental and social activists/leaders who are working for a change at local and national level with a mission of ?Environment Conservation, Sustainable Development and Peace? through GED (Good, Environmental and Democratic) governance.
In short, the Green Civil Society is an umbrella body of environmental and social activists/leaders/organizations to raise a single/common voice for environment so that the voice will be strong enough for the desired change.
